LEAKED: Ford Bronco To Share Engine With Lincoln Aviator

A pair of powerful V6s should have the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited worried.

As we get closer and closer to the official reveal of the new Ford Bronco, we continue to uncover more juicy details about the much-anticipated Jeep Wrangler Unlimited competitor. Closer to the start of this month, we learned that the Bronco probably won't use the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine found in the F-150 Raptor, and now, new information seems to confirm exactly this.

A social media user by the name of Alan Placer shared a screenshot of a conversation he was having with a supplier employee via the Facebook group Ford Bronco 2021. The post seemed to confirm that two smaller V6 engines are on the cards for the Bronco: a 2.7-liter EcoBoost and a 3.0-liter EcoBoost.

We already know these engines from other Ford products. In the F-150, the 2.7L produces 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. In the Ford Explorer, the 3.0L engine produces either 365 hp/380 lb-ft or, in the high-performance ST, a meatier 400 hp/415 lb-ft. In the Lincoln Aviator plug-in hybrid, this engine is paired with an electric motor to generate up to 494 hp. Could this be an indicator that a PHEV version of the Bronco is a possibility? It wouldn't be the most shocking move since the all-new Ford F-150 pickup now comes with a hybrid variant.

If these engine rumors turn out to be true, the Bronco should pack plenty of power, especially if the engines receive an extra electrified boost. It should easily outgun the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which offers a maximum 285 hp. Although the base 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo-four should provide a more affordable entry point into the Bronco range, this rugged SUV seems deserving of at least six cylinders, which seems to be exactly what it'll be getting. According to the exchange posted on Facebook, the 2.7L engine will come first in September this year, while the more powerful 3.0L will arrive late next year. Before that happens, the reveal of the Bronco is set to take place on July 13.
