Ford Ranger Transformed Into Affordable Overlander

Capable yet affordable overlanding with a Ford Ranger.

Overlanding is becoming big business. While big expensive centerpieces grab the headlines, companies also understand that people have budgets. Hellwig is a 73-year-old family-owned business that specializes in towing, hauling, and performance suspension equipment. At this year's SEMA show, Hellwig debuted its "Attainable Adventure" 2019 Ford Ranger custom truck. Built as an overland exploration vehicle, the Attainable Adventure Ranger is kitted out with two Specialized electric mountain bikes and a Trail Kitchens bed-mounted kitchen. Overlanding also means traversing challenging terrain as well as living in it, so the Ranger's chassis has been given an off-roading upgrade.

Hellwig chose the new 2019 Ford Ranger XLT as a platform to build upon as it has an "affordable base price, capable chassis and economical, yet powerful, EcoBoost engine." Work was carried out to prep the truck by California-based Old Steel Fabrication with a Stage 5 suspension system by Icon Vehicle Dynamics, a Yakima bed rack and awning, and a Tepui Hybox rooftop tent. Hellwig then fitted a set of Bushwacker fender flares to fit a set of 35-inch Falken Wildpeak M/T tires around 17-inch Icon alloys to the Ranger. Completing the outside of the truck is Addictive Desert Designs front and rear bumpers, a T-Rex X-Metal grille, and a Rigid Industries light bar.

To sustain life off the grid, the Attainable Adventure Ranger also features a GoalZero Yeti 1400 portable power station and solar panels to power auxiliary electronics and charge the electric mountain bikes mounted on the tailgate. Rounding things off is an ARB fridge, Daystar fuel cans, a Krazy Beaver shovel, and a RIGD hitch swing used to store the Specialized electric mountain bikes. Finally, the retro paint job is supplied for the show truck by LGE-CTS Motorsports.

The claim is affordable, but a price hasn't been given for the build. Swap out the electric mountain bikes and leave off the fancy paint job, and it shouldn't be too crazy.
