If you ever wonder why the big three American automakers - Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler - don't build full-size luxury sedans anymore, it's because full-size pickup trucks have made them redundant. Why buy a six-figure luxury sedan with a tiny trunk when for around the same money (or less in some cases), you can get a massive pickup truck with all of the same features, a larger engine, enough room for a massive family, and a bed for all their stuff?

Pickup trucks are by far the best-selling segment in the United States and they are so refined nowadays, they are starting to steal sales from luxury automakers. Within the fancy pickup segment, we think the 2020 Ram 1500 Limited ranks supreme. This top-of-the-line Ram starts at $53,665 but Ram sent us a tester that was decked out with options, bringing the as-tested price to $75,850. If you don't think a pickup truck could possibly be worth that much, let us prove you wrong. Here are nine amazing features of the Ram 1500 Limited.

Our tester arrived sporting the most expensive of the 1500's engine options, a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 that is a $4,995 upgrade. It may be a hefty add-on but the diesel engine offers impressive fuel economy of up to 22/32/26 mpg city/highway/combined. If you get the 33-gallon fuel tank (a $445 option), the 1500 can travel over 1,000 miles between fillups. What's more luxurious than rarely having to get out to fill the tank?

In terms of refinement, FCA's Generation 3 EcoDiesel is remarkably quiet. With the radio on, we could barely hear it running and it offers smooth, effortless passing power. It lacks the characteristic rumble of the HEMI V8 but we were charmed by the diesel V6.

The Black Appearance Package is a sizable option with a price of $3,995. It is worth noting, you do get a lot of bang for your buck. This package deletes any chrome or silver accents that may have been on the truck, creating a murdered-out look. It includes a black RAM grille badge, 22-inch black wheels, black badging, black headlight bezels, a tri-fold tonneau cover, and tow hooks. As a bonus, it also comes with the optional 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system. This is the best stereo system we've tested in a pickup truck and it wouldn't be out of place in a German luxury sedan.

When you step up to the top Ram 1500 Limited trim level, the smaller 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen is replaced by a massive 12-inch unit that looks incredible. Not only is it intuitive to use, but it also features plenty of hard-key buttons surrounding it for easy access to climate and audio controls. As part of the $2,295 Limited Level 1 Equipment Group, our tester's touchscreen also featured a helpful 360-degree camera with trailer-tow mirrors.

There are so many places to charge devices on the Ram, we almost couldn't count them all. Ram has stuffed myriad USB, USB-C, and 115-volt charging ports throughout the cabin, you could find a place to juice up your device while blindfolded. There's even a clever wireless charger mounted in the massive center console, which uses a unique design that still allows you to peak at your phone screen.

None of these luxury features would be worthwhile if the Ram 1500 wasn't comfortable on long journeys. It has some of the most comfortable seats of any pickup truck we've tested and the seats are heated and ventilated in the front and the back. Finding ventilated seats in the rear of a car is a rare find, even in the six-figure price bracket. Seeing this feature on a truck is shocking. Not only are the rear seats ventilated, they are massive as well. Rear occupants are treated to over 45-inches of legroom, which is more than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Carpets aren't usually a feature that most buyers use to factor into their purchase decision, unless perhaps it is the lamb's wool carpets of a Bentley or Rolls-Royce. The Ram's carpets may not be lamb's wool but they are quite clever. The Limited floor mats feature a carpeted section that can be removed to reveal a rubberized section. This is great for the winter season when you don't want to track snow onto the carpers.

All of the big three American automakers have some sort of gimmick with their truck tailgates. But we think Ram's Multi-Function tailgate solution is the smartest. This $995 option opens up normally via a button on the tailgate or remotely using the key or a button in the cabin. But if you click a secondary button, the tailgate opens sideways, allowing owners to reach items in the bed without leaning over. This can also be paired with a center-mounted step, making it easier to get into the bed.

The RamBox Cargo Management system is another clever FCA innovation. This $995 option adds two storage areas on either side of the tailgate. We like this feature for carrying smaller items that would roll around in the main bed. Both sides even feature water drains so you can fill the RamBoxes up with ice for a tailgate party.
