It's been just over three months since the all-new 2021 Ford F-150 was revealed. It's a truck that needs no introduction and its importance within Ford's lineup goes without saying. Ford has now released the capability specs for the new F-150, and in truck world, it's all about those towing and hauling numbers. It's why the likes of GMC has added even smarter towing technology to its 2021 Sierra.

So, how does the new Ford F-150 stack up against its closest rivals? Described as offering "best-in-class towing and payload" figures, it's everything you'd expect from a new Ford truck.

The latest F-150 has an excellent maximum tow rating of 14,000 pounds. That's 800 lbs more than the most capable version of the 2020 F-150 could manage and beats out the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, too, which can tow a maximum of 13,400 lbs. The maximum payload figure of 3,325 lbs is just as towering, which is over 1,000 lbs more than the Silverado 1500. Three box sizes - 5.5-, 6.5- and 8.0-ft - are available, with the maximum cargo box volume working out to 77.4 cubic feet.

Those brilliant towing and hauling numbers are made possible by the F-150's latest powertrains, for which Ford has now fully divulged all the juicy details.

First in line is a 3.3-liter Ti-VCT naturally-aspirated V6 engine with 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft, which has a maximum towing capacity of 8,200 lbs, the lowest in the range.

The base engine is followed by the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 with 325 hp/400 lb-ft, the 5.0L V8 with 400 hp/410 lb-ft, and the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel V6 with 250 hp/440 lb-ft. The Ram 1500 still has the edge here, as its 3.0-liter EcoDiesel manages 260 hp/480 lb-ft.

The best towing capacity of 14,000 lbs is available when speccing the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 which generates 400 hp and 500 lb-ft. However, the most potent engine is the class-exclusive 3.5L PowerBoost full hybrid with 430 hp and a strong 570 lb-ft: that's the most torque delivered in any F-150 pickup. For the best payload figures, the V8 is the model to go for, with this engine seeing increases of five hp and 10 lb-ft.

All six engines are paired with Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission.

"F-150 is the flagship of Ford's dedication to building the best trucks and represents our commitment to not just meeting customer needs but exceeding them," said Ford's truck group marketing manager, Todd Eckert. He also went on to praise the various smart features that make the F-150 even more versatile, such as Pro Power Onboard, Tailgate Work Surface, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist. The Pro Power Onboard offers 7.2 kilowatts of available power, enough to power 28 regular refrigerators. Ford claims that this system serves up 18 times more exportable power than its closest rival.

With its class-leading capability numbers, a host of clever technologies, and even a fully electric version on the way, the 2021 Ford F-150 is well-placed to dominate as its predecessors have. It will go on sale this fall and, although Ford hasn't officially released pricing, we know the new F-150 will start at $28,940.
