Toyota Recall Tundra Trucks, Sequoia SUVs to Fix Air Bag Fault

October 15, 2018 by Jerry Hirsch, @Jerryhirsch

Toyota recalled more than 150,000 Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia SUVs because a software error might prevent triggering of the air bags in a crash.

The recall involves 137,700 Tundras and 12,600 Sequoias, all from the 2018 and 2019 model years.

The air bag electronic control unit, or ECU, in these vehicles may erroneously detect a fault during the vehicle start-up self-check. If this occurs, the ECU may not deploy the airbags in a crash.

Toyota said it discovered the problem after receiving reports describing illumination of the safety restraint system’s warning light in some of the vehicles. It was accompanied by a warning buzzer, master warning light illumination and a message on the dashboard display.

Toyota recovered the sensors thought to be causing the problem and began an investigation.

Toyota will begin to notify owners of the vehicles on Oct. 22, asking them to go to their dealers. Technicians will then update the software for the air bag ECU to correct the problem. The recall is expected to begin later this month. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at (888) 270-9371. Toyota’s identification code for this recall is J0X.
