Toyota Pushes Final Takata Airbag Safety Recall Ahead of Schedule

Toyota Canada has announced it is conducting the final phase of the safety recall involving Takata airbag inflators ahead of schedule, as the final remedy inflators are now available.

In Canada, the affected models include the 2003-2008 Corolla, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2003-2006 Tundra, and 2002-2010 Lexus SC 430, adding up to about 37,591 vehicles.

According to Takata, the front passenger airbag inflators in some of these vehicles can become defective as a result of high absolute humidity, high temperatures, or high temperature cycling.

Prolonged exposure to these conditions may cause propellant degradation, and, when activated, a non-desiccated ammonium nitrate inflator — which is exactly the type used in these airbag — that contains a degraded propellant may rupture, potentially leading to metal fragments passing through the airbag and into the vehicle interior at high speeds.

Obviously, this is a major safety risk and if you own one of the aforementioned vehicles, you should get your front passenger airbag inflators repaired as soon as possible. It only takes an hour of your time.

As part of an initial recall phase, Toyota repaired the front passenger inflators by replacing them with non-desiccated phase stabilized ammonium nitrate inflators, also produced by Takata (with help from Toyota). At that time, final remedy inflators produced by other suppliers were not yet available — but now they are. As a result, Toyota is immediately recalling the affected vehicles for repairs ahead of the schedule that had been established by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Depending on the vehicle model, Toyota dealers will replace the front passenger inflator or airbag assembly, as necessary, at no cost to owners,” the automaker said in a press release, before adding that Canadian owners of all affected vehicles would be notified by mid-December.
