The Two-Tone Ford F-250 'Highboy' Is Back
Retro is in, and this is about as retro as they come.
A Salina, Kansas-based Ford dealer, Long McArthur Ford, with a penchant for selling seriously cool Ford machinery, is bringing back one of the most iconic truck designs of the 1960s and 70s, without Ford's express blessing.
From 1967 through the mid-1970s, Ford's 4x4 F-250 was lovingly referred to as the "Highboy" by fans - a reference to the fact the truck sat some four inches higher at the front to provide proper clearance for the 4WD drivetrain. That taller ride height, especially when coupled with a delicious two-tone paint job, made the Highboy a styling icon, and a coveted machine among truck fans.
Now, the Highboy has returned for 2020, albeit thoroughly modernized.
To make its modern interpretation of the Highboy, Long McArthur Ford starts with the 2020 Ford F-250 XL Regular Cab with STX Appearance Package, throwing a long list of aftermarket parts at the Ford Super Duty to transform it into a capable looker with plenty of retro flair. Most noticeably, the truck sports LMP Classic Two-Tone and Highboy Bedside graphics, and features a raised front ride height courtesy of a Rough Country 2" Front Suspension Lift.
To that, Long McArthur adds 18" polished Pro Comp wheels wrapped in 35" BF Goodrich T/A KO2 OWL Tires, a K3 Highboy polished roll bar, KC Hilite Day Lighter Lights, and a Sungard Window Tint. The speedometer is calibrated to the larger-diameter tires, and the truck ships with a serialized dash plaque, certificate of authenticity, and 3-year/36,000-mile warranty to boot.
All told, buyers are looking at an $11,995 price tag, on top of the purchase price of the base truck, and while in theory, you could order one with the standard 6.2-liter V8 engine, the two currently in stock are powered by Ford's 7.3-liter V8 developing 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque.
As a total package, the Highboy treatment does more for the F-250 Super Duty's appearance than it does its performance, although the suspension lift means more approach angle and clearance, and BF Goodrich's T/A KO2s are solid off-road performers. But if you live and breathe Ford trucks, and you have a soft spot for stylish retro-modern customs, Long McArthur Ford's F-250 Highboy should be right up your alley, but if you'd like something a little less wieldy, the dealer always has the F-150 Cattleman Edition.
