Tesla Cybertruck Pre-Orders Have More Than Doubled

The excitement hasn't stopped.

The Tesla Cybertruck has been one of the most talked-about new vehicles in years. Despite its polarizing exterior design and a somewhat botched reveal involving its supposed shatter-proof glass, the pre-orders came in immediately. The Cybertruck's November 21, 2019 reveal quickly led to a huge influx of pre-orders. Elon Musk announced a few days later, on November 26, Tesla had received 250,000 orders.

Placing an order only requires a refundable $100 deposit and we could easily see many of those individuals changing their minds. Sudden purchases due to excitement without little thought and over a year-long wait for the actual product could have an effect. Yet, it appears those pre-orders haven't stopped coming in.

A data analysis done by the Cybertruck Owners Club projects the latest pre-order figure to be around 532,000, as of February 18, 2020. In other words, around 272,000 additional orders were placed since Musk's November 26 tweet. Assuming these figures are correct, the math shows around 3,350 orders have come in each day since the official reveal. In other words, Tesla has been collecting about $335,000 a day, interest-free.

This is extremely impressive given that none of these early customers have actually driven the all-electric truck. In most cases, they haven't even seen it in-person. Then again, this isn't all that unusual for Tesla.

Remember, the Tesla Model 3 reveal back in 2016 brought in a similar number of reservations, though the deposit price was $1,000. What's more, those early Model 3 depositors had to wait nearly two years until their orders arrived. Granted, Tesla at the time still had some serious production issues that were still unresolved.

Today, the situation is different, so chances are the first Cybertruck deliveries will proceed as planned, sometime in late 2021 or early 2022. It's still way too early to know how many Cybertruck depositors will ultimately change their minds, but as long as Tesla sticks to the production schedule this time around, the excitement surrounding the vehicle will only continue to grow.
