Jeep Fires Back At Ford Bronco With 2021 Wrangler Updates

A credible threat is coming in the form of Ford's Bronco. Jeep is getting ready.

Just as Ford prepares to finally unveil its rugged Bronco off-road SUV, its foremost competitor - the iconic Jeep Wrangler - is getting some tweaks to keep it competitive. Naturally, the biggest change will be the new plug-in-hybrid Wrangler 4xe, and as we reported previously, a few other subtle tweaks to the powertrain lineup are on the way, too.

But according to a new report, that's far from all that Jeep has in store for the JL Wrangler; the 2021 model year will see new tech features brought to the model line, along with some tweaks to the AWD system on some trims.

According to Mopar Insider's sources, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is getting Selectable Tire-Fill Alerts, fitted to examples with the seven-inch Uconnect infotainment screen. The system monitors tire pressures while the operator is airing up or airing down their tires, issuing a honk of the horn when the desired tire pressure is reached - certainly a welcome addition for anyone who spends a lot of time airing down their tires for off-road ventures.

Better still, the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon's Forward Facing Camera will become available on the Wrangler Sahara and Wrangler Rubicon, allowing drivers to bring up a live trail cam feed to help with low-speed trail maneuvers. The camera is mounted within the grille, providing a low-to-the-ground vantage point you can't possibly get from the driver's seat.

Off-Road Plus - another trickle-down from the Jeep Gladiator lineup - will also land in the 2021 Wrangler, allowing drivers to engage the rear locker and tailor the throttle, shift points, and traction control to suit higher speed off-road driving - not just low-speed rock crawling.

And finally, from 2021, the Jeep Wrangler Sahara's Selec-Trac transfer case will be available on Sport models, too, while the Rubicon will inherit the more heavy-duty Rock-Trac transfer case. Both are full-time 4WD systems that can automatically engage and disengage the front axle to suit the conditions.

Apart from the 4xe hybrid, none of the Wrangler's 2021-model-year changes are especially earth-shattering, but they help keep an already-solid off-roader relevant as the segment gains an all-new heavy-hitter.
