GM Reveals Early Sketches Of Reborn GMC Hummer

See how GM's new EV went from abstract concept to real-life truck.

Earlier this week, General Motors finally unveiled to the world the hotly anticipated pure-electric vehicle that will kick off its new era of electrification: the GMC Hummer. It feels like it's been ages since the battery-powered truck and SUV models were first teased during the 2020 Super Bowl, but the masses don't seem to have lost any interest between now and then; "Hummer EV" was the most-searched term on Google the day of the reveal, which is remarkable when you remember that there's a US presidential election going on.

GM Design was ready to fan the flames and keep interest alive, releasing a series of design sketches that depict how the new Hummer went from abstract concept to flesh-and-bone EV.

The images were released to GM Design's official Instagram page, which has become a favorite stop of ours as it clues us in on the automaker's current thinking with regard to automotive design. According to GM, the sketches originated in both its Warren, Michigan and North Hollywood, California design studios, and there's plenty of diversity among the collection of sketches.

Some sketches, for instance, depict a vehicle relatively close in appearance to the old Hummer H2T pickup truck, while others look like they came straight from the "Halo" video game series. If they all share one thing in common - besides, you know, the fact that they are all broad, flat pickup trucks - it's the classic slotted Hummer grille.

The actual GMC Hummer is every bit as handsome as the sketches that led to its final shape, with plenty of H2T DNA and a stately, intimidating appearance that, somehow, never quite borders on brash. It's certainly a far cry from the unapproachable stainless steel space-wedge that Musk et al. came up with for the forthcoming Tesla Cybertruck.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV launches in the fall of 2021 with a starting price of $112,595 for the top-tier Edition 1 trim. After 2022, lower-priced versions will start appearing with price tags starting at $79,995.
