Twenty percent of the honorees on the 2019 Wards 10 Best Engines List are Blue Oval-branded. This year’s list of the 10 best engines in the business includes the 480-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 that powers the limited-edition 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt and the exceptionally powerful and efficient 3.0-liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel offered with the new Ford F-150.

“Wards Intelligence data confirms falling take-rates for big V8s, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a few last hurrahs,” wrote WardsAuto’s editors. “And the latest iteration of the 5.0L V8 in the ’19 Ford Mustang GT — and in particular, the pitch-perfect version in the Bullitt — makes us smile every time we punch the throttle.

Wards editors said that while they love the Ford Mustang GT’s 460-horsepower 5.0-liter V8, the Bullitt variant with its 20 extra horsepower “demonstrates how small changes and careful attention to tuning can bring new life to mature technology and create a whole new level of firepower.” Editors also lauded the Mustang Bullitt’s active exhaust for creating sweet, sweet music with the throaty engine note.

Editors were no less effusive in their praise of the 3.0-liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel that was introduced for the 2018 Ford F-150. Not only does the F-150’s diesel option deliver best-in-class diesel horsepower, torque, max towing, and max payload, but it’s also the most efficient truck on the market.

“What clinches it for the Wards judges is the 26 mpg (9.0 L/100 km) we observed while logging about 800 miles (1,287 km) in an F-150 SuperCrew 4×2. That’s the best fuel economy we’ve ever seen in a fullsize pickup.”

The Mustang and F-150 also earned two spots on the 2018 Wards 10 Best Engines List, with the former making the cut again with the 5.0-liter V8 and the latter getting the nod for its 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6.
