New cars, even expensive ones, tend to have copious amounts of plastic and other cheap materials in their cabins. With this inconvenient truth in mind, Damian Skotnicki, the founder of Carlex Design, wanted to create a new vehicle based on the Mercedes-AMG G63 that harkens back to a time when products were hand-made by craftsmen. The result of this idea is the G63 Steampunk Edition. It's a one-of-ten creation by Carlex Design, and stands as a tribute to Skotnicki's friend, "a very special person, a genius, and a promotor of steampunk."

Steampunk is a genre of science fiction feature a future that was inspired by 19th-century steam-powered machinery. Skotnicki says "the G Steampunk Edition is a perfect choice for collectors fascinated with the art of jewelry, hand-craft, and fantasy. The car that you see is one of 10 unique vehicles made on the basis of the latest G63 AMG model. Each of them shall bear a different relief on the roof, making it absolutely outstanding."

Unlike some other custom creations based on the G-Class, Carlex has not changed much of the car's exterior appearance with new parts. Instead, the company fitted 22-inch copper-colored rims and applied a copper roof cover. Carlex says the roof cover was crafted by copper processing experts then engraved with steampunk motifs by jewelers and designers. The result is a work of art on the roof, unlike anything we've seen before.

If the exterior isn't wild enough, the interior is far more custom. The whole car took 5,200 hours to create and features hand-ornamented criollo-hued leather with copper and rose gold-plated interior trim pieces. There is virtually no plastic throughout this entire interior. The floor of the car is made from American walnut wood and every joint has been finished with leather.

All 10 owners will receive a leather-bound book with gold emblems. The book documents the entire build process, showing how the G-Class was transformed into steampunk artwork. Customers will also receive a personal calligraphed register made by artists and craftsmen, a letter from the authors to the collector, and a bespoke collector's plaque inside the car.
