On sale now, the 2020 Toyota Tundra has been lightly updated, and the 310-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 has been dropped, leaving the 381-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 as the only engine. Also standard on all 2020 Tundras is a Class IV trailer hitch receiver and a trailer brake controller. Let's take an in-depth look at the various towing capacities each Tundra configuration offers.

Toyota keeps things simple for the Tundra. There are no special packages, no engine or transmission options, and no specific options required to get the maximum tow rating (like the 20-inch wheels required on the F-150) for a given configuration.

What's the 2020 Toyota Tundra's Maximum Towing Capacity?

The highest tow rating for the 2020 Tundra is 10,200 pounds in the two-wheel-drive double cab with the 6.5-foot bed in the SR or SR5 trims. The second highest is 10,100 pounds available in four configurations: Limited 2WD double cab with the 6.5-foot bed, SR and SR5 2WD double cab with the 8.1-foot bed, and the SR5 2WD CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed. The third highest rating is 9,900 pounds in the SR, SR5 and TRD Pro 4WD double cab with the 6.5-foot bed.

What's the 2020 Toyota Tundra's Minimum Towing Capacity?

The fact that every 2020 Tundra comes with a Class IV receiver and trailer brake controller means the minimum tow ratings are quite high compared to competitors. The lowest towing capacity is 8,800 pounds in the 4WD CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed. It is available in three trims: Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition.

The Tundra has a small range of towing capacities considering there are no drivetrain or powertrain options, and it has standard towing features. With ratings from 8,800 pounds to 10,200 pounds, it should be easy to pick the truck that works best for you. Additional features and options can decrease the tow rating. Remember to always stay within the gross weight limits listed on the door tag for axle and total vehicle weights.

Tundra Double Cab

The highest tow rating for the double cab is 10,200 pounds for the 2WD with the 6.5-foot bed in the SR and SR5. The next highest is 10,100 pounds available in three configurations: the Limited 2WD with the 6.5-foot bed, the SR 2WD with the 8.1-foot bed and the SR5 2WD with the 8.1-foot bed. The third highest rating is 9,900 pounds in the 4WD 6.5-foot bed in the SR, SR5 and TRD Pro.

Tundra CrewMax

CrewMax cabs are only available with the 5.5-foot bed. The highest towing capacity is 10,100 pounds in the 2WD SR5. The next highest is 9,800 pounds in the 4WD SR5. The third highest rating is 9,400 pounds in the 2WD Limited, 2WD Platinum and 2WD 1794 Edition.

What's the Tundra TRD Pro's Maximum Towing Capacity?

The TRD Pro is the specialty off-road version of the Tundra. With the suspension lift and Fox shocks, which come standard in the TRD Pro, a lower maximum towing capacity is expected. In reality, they help the TRD Pro claim a higher towing capacity than the luxury versions of the truck. Previously, the Tundra TRD Pro was only offered in the CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed. For 2020, you can once again get the TRD Pro in double-cab 6.5-foot bed form. The maximum towing capacity of the TRD Pro is 9,900 pounds and is found in the new double-cab configuration. The CrewMax TRD Pro carries on from last year and has a towing capacity of 9,200 pounds. Both versions are 4WD only
