2021 Toyota Tacoma Loses One Of Its Coolest Features

Specifically, the TRD Pro trim.

Despite fresh competition from Ford, Jeep, and, in the near future, Nissan, the Toyota Tacoma has easily stood its ground as America's best-selling mid-size pickup truck. It's a title Toyota fully intends to hold for years to come. The Tacoma is available in both extended- and crew-cab configurations and six trim levels, including the off-road-focused TRD Pro. However, for the 2021 model year, it appears the Tacoma TRD Pro is losing one of its coolest features.

TFLoffroad, via YouTube, has confirmed with Toyota that the Tacoma TRD Pro is losing its snorkel, aka the "Desert Air Intake", in Toyota-speak, for 2021. No specific reason has been given just yet, but we suspect it could be due to a supplier issue and/or low consumer demand.

The Toyota website already indicates the snorkel is gone for 2021, but it's still being offered as a $750 feature for the outgoing 2020 truck. First come, first served.

For those who don't already know, the purpose of a truck snorkel is to allow in cleaner and cooler air into the engine and prevent things like dust and water from entering. Snorkels also improve the truck's performance and reduce overall fuel consumption. And no, a snorkel does not mean a truck or any other off-road vehicle equipped with one can submerge underwater.

Not long ago, Toyota announced a new Tacoma trim called the Trail Edition, which begins at $34,000 for the 2WD model and $37,080 for 4WD. A few standard features include 16-inch TRD off-road wheels wrapped in Kevlar all-terrain rubber, black exterior badging, black seating with tan stitching, and all-weather floor liners.

Meanwhile, the base Tacoma SR Access Cab is quite a bit more affordable at $26,150. Opting for 4WD lifts the price to $29,225. The 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro, sans snorkel, is available in 4WD only and begins at $46,780.
