That's NOT to say we're unhappy.

It's no secret that the reborn Ford Bronco is coming very soon. In fact, the official public reveal is expected to happen at the 2020 New York Auto in the first week of April. A special debut event likely to be streamed live online is scheduled for March. Another known fact is that the same platform underpinning the Ford Ranger will be utilized for the Bronco. The two off-road capable vehicles will share many mechanical features, which we assumed included the engine. The US-spec Ranger is currently only powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline-four with 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic is also standard.

It would make total sense for Ford to use this same engine in the Bronco but, apparently, that won't be the case.

Sources involved with the new Bronco are claiming the F-150's 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 totaling 325 hp and up to 400 lb-ft of torque will be used instead. It will be paired with the same transmission. It's not entirely surprising Ford has chosen the more powerful engine, especially given that it's also found in the Edge ST and Lincoln Nautilus.

However, it remains unclear whether or not the V6 will be the Bronco's sole engine. It's still entirely possible the inline-four will serve as the base offering. We're reached out to Ford seeking clarification, but chances are we won't know for sure for another month or so.

But let's say for a moment the Bronco will indeed be offered with the V6. That means it'll offer way more power than its closest rival, the Jeep Wrangler. The most powerful engine it has is a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 hp and 260 lb-ft. Its turbo four-pot delivers 270 hp and 295 lb-ft. So right off the bat, the Bronco would have the edge over the Wrangler.

Over the past few weeks, more Bronco information has been coming out, such as a new patent detailing its unique removable door design. Fortunately, we won't have to wait much longer for Ford's iconic SUV is to make its triumphant return.
